• Packer Training Camp Preview-Quarterbacks

Since this is the slowest part of the offseason I decided that I would start looking towards training camp and how our current players stack up. Every day I will feature a different position and will discuss my opinions on how the players stack up at this point in time. I will begin with the quarterbacks or what I would like to call “The Great Transition from Favre to Rodgers”.

aaron-rodgers Packer Training Camp Preview-QuarterbacksSimply put the quarterback position has changed a lot since last season. Obviously Brett Favre retired so that is a huge change itself. Aaron Rodgers will finally be able to get off the bench and truly show what he has. This will also be a change for me since I pretty much grew up with Brett as the quarterback so this will be the first season where I will see a different quarterback running the team (I guess I was alive for some of Magic Man’s time with the Packers but I obviously don’t remember any of it since I was four when Brett took over the reins). While a lot of Packerland is in a panic worrying that the Packers will stink now that Brett has retired, I am actually quite optimistic. Why you may ask? I am optimistic since in my opinion Rodgers is more suited for our current offense. You could tell that Thompson built this team so it would be ready to succeed even after Brett retired. The offense system we run also plays into Rodger’s strengths. The offense is full of short passes which is good since Rodgers’ strength is his accuracy.

I also think the Packers will benefit from having a quarterback that can actually run with the ball. Rodgers obviously isn’t a speed demon but he is much faster than Brett so teams at least need to respect his ability to scramble. This could open up receivers down the field since the defense would have to worry about Rodger’s running for the first down himself.

Now I know the biggest concern people have about Rodgers is that he is supposedly injury prone. I just don’t really agree with this. He has only had two injuries. One injury (I believe a broken leg or ankle) was a freak type of injury. It is one of those type of injuries that can’t be prevented. If Brett would have been hit the same way he also would have been hurt. Last year’s injury was just an ankle sprain. He did end up missing some games but this is essentially irrelevant because he said he would have played if the team needed him. Since he was only the backup there was no need for him to play and that is why he sat on the bench and rested so he didn’t injure it farther.

As you can tell I am quite optimistic about Rodgers. As long as he doesn’t have a freak injury I believe he will have a great season. With our amazing receiving corps (the best in the league) I can imagine Rodgers having a Pro Bowl type season. I can imagine 25-30 TDs and 3,500+ yards. The reason I think he will do so well in his first season is that he has so many weapons. He will have at least 5 receiver threats, 2 tight end threats, and 2 running back threats. He will have so many weapons that there is no way the defense can cover all our offensive threats. Rodgers will probably encounter some growing pains this season but Packer fans need to support him so he doesn’t lose confidence. I don’t want to hear any Packer fans boo Rodgers after just one bad play.

brian-brohm Packer Training Camp Preview-QuarterbacksAfter Rodgers’ we have two newcomers to the team. We have Brian Brohm and Matt Flynn. We have a lot of potential in our backups but we have no experience what-so-ever. If Rodgers gets hurt I believe the Packers will be in some trouble. Brohm hasn’t looked bad in practice (a little inconsistent though) but rookies barely ever start at the QB position and are actually successful. I hope that Brohm can stay on the bench the entire season so he can get used to the pro game. From early camp reports you can tell that Brohm is really bright and is picking up the playbook very quickly. Brohm does need to work on his accuracy and arm strength though.

matt-flynn Packer Training Camp Preview-QuarterbacksMatt Flynn on the other hand is a huge project. When I went to mini camp I could tell Flynn had potential but he needs a lot of work to reach that potential. Flynn improved from the first mini camp practice to the second but you can tell he needs work on pretty much every aspect of his game. To put it kindly, if Flynn has to play this season the Packers’ season is over. He is just not developed enough to be anything more than a third stringer.

So at this point I would have to say Rodgers, Brohm, and Flynn will be the Packers QBs this season. If the Packers would sign a veteran (I highly doubt it) I could see the Packers try to sneak Flynn on the practice squad since at this point in his career he probably should be on the practice squad.

This will be an interesting year for the QB position. What are your opinions on the position? Feel free to leave a comment with your thoughts.

At this point in the season is it better to play to win or for a better draft pick?
