I have some bad news for every Packer fan. Matt Millen has been finally been fired as the Lions GM. I guess the days of the Lions being bottom feeders might finally start ending. Maybe the Lions will finally be able to actually get a competent GM now. Hopefully they find another “genius” like Millen but that is unlikely since the Lions really couldn’t get any worse than they have been lately.

I honestly have no idea why this didn’t happen earler. Matt Millen has essentially done nothing good his entire time in Detroit. Pretty much the only reason he kept his job as long as he did was because he was friends with the Ford’s. Obviously the friendship finally wasn’t able to save him since he was finally shown the door.

The Lions might now be a decent team in a couple years and won’t be two free wins any longer. Too bad the Packers won’t have to deal with Millen anymore since I think purple and yellow would suit him very well.

Around the NFL Week One

I don’t know if it is just me but yesterday’s games really surprised me. If yesterday’s game were any indication this will be a very interesting season.

We’ll begin with the big news of yesterday. Tom Brady is out for the season (it hasn’t been confirmed yet but I can’t see it not being a season ending injury). All I can say about the injury is that karma eventually bites you. While I would never cheer that someone got hurt I don’t feel sorry for Brady at all. Personally I think he is a pretty terrible human being and there are very few players that deserve what he got more. Now that he is out the Patriots season is essentially over. While the Patriots have a slim chance at the playoffs they have absolutely no chance at winning the Super Bowl anymore and I have to say that I am happy since the Patriots have some of the cockiest fans I have ever seen.

Now let’s look at the biggest upset yesteday. The Bears ended up beating the Colts. The Bears looked really good in the game. I personally thought the Bears were going to be terrible this season but I guess I was wrong. While they had a good game I wouldn’t annoint them division champs. The Colts offense seemed out of sync all night so that made the Bears look better. If they continue to play like they did last night I would start worrying a little since the Bears could be a threat.

It is a totally different story for the Lions. Unless the Lions improve quickly they will be easily one of the worst teams this season. They played terrible yesterday. They lost to the Falcons. If losing to the Falcons wasn’t enough they were dominated by the Falcons. The Lions couldn’t do anything on offense or defense. The Lions must also have the worst run defense in the entire league since they gave up more than 300 yards rushing. How do you give up 300 yards rushing. At this point I think Ryan Grant and Brandon Jackson must be salavating getting to play them next week. I have no trouble saying that the Lions are easily the worst team in the division at this time.

Finally I couldn’t end this post without talking about Brett’s performance. At first I wasn’t going to watch the game but I eventually decided to. I don’t know if it is just me but I think almost everyone is way overrating his performance. I am not saying he played bad. I thought his performance was quite average though. His first touchdown was due to a blown coverage and the second touchdown was pure luck. At this point I think Favre is not going to enjoy the Jets as much as the Packers. The Jets pass blocking was terrible at points during the game. If Favre gets hit that often he won’t survive the season. People also need to take into consideration that the Jets played the Dolphins (the team that won a whopping one game last season). While I don’t think the Jets will have a bad season I think they will be around 500. Maybe they can sneak into the playoffs and we can get a 2nd round pick out of them. If they do make the playoffs I think it will be a one and done type of situation.

So what were your thoughts on yesterday’s games?

Gene Upshaw has died

Reports around the internet are claiming that Gene Upshaw died this morning. This actually came as a surprise to me since he was only 63 years old. Supposedly he had pancreatic cancer though. While I have never been a huge supporter of Gene Upshaw it is always a sad day when someone dies prematurely. Gene Upshaw was in charge of the NFL player’s association for around 16 years. I never totally agreed with how Gene Upshaw ran the player’s association especially regarding retired players but this isn’t really the time to get into that.

While it might not be the best thing to discuss in this post, Gene Upshaw’s death will have an impact in the latest contract talks. I doubt it will have a huge impact though since I am assuming Gene Upshaw and the player’s association had a plan in case this happened since he did have cancer. I am assuming that the player’s association will hire an interim to fill in for Gene Upshaw while they find a replacement.

My thoughts go out to Gene Upshaw’s family because it is never easy when someone’s life is cut premature by cancer.
