Today the Packers had their last training camp practice before the first preseason game. Check out the Green Bay Press Gazette for all the details. Not a whole lot appeared to happen in the practice. It seemed to mostly be a practice to get ready for the first preseason game so it isn’t that surprising that nothing really stood out. The only notable thing to come out of the practice was that Muir stumbled off the field with an injury. Early reports are that it is not serious. I hope these reports are right since the Packers cannot afford to have another injury at the DT position. If Muir misses extended time the Packers are going to have to add a DT very soon.

If more reports come out later tonight or tomorrow I will update this post so be sure to keep checking back. What are your thoughts about the DT position? Do you think the Packers are in deep trouble and need to add a DT quick or do you think everything will work its way out by the time the season begins?

Packers Evening Training Camp Report (August 8th, 2008)

Last night was the final two a day practice as the Packers have finally installed their whole offense and defense. From reports from JS Online, and two from the Green Bay Press Gazette (first and second) there are some positives to be drawn from the practice.

  • Aaron Rodgers played decent. He threw too interceptions and didn’t play as good as he has in previous practices but there are two things that could have lead to that. First several starters on the offense were missing so that never helps. Plus our defense was working on our blitz packages. I wouldn’t worry about Rodgers because he has played much better since the Favre fiasco has left.
  • Speaking of the defense, supposedly the Packers are going to be doing a lot more blitzes this season. Almost the whole practice was dedicated to blitzes. The Packers are definently trying some new things since they know have a 3-3 and a 2-4. I personally have never even seen a 2-4 so that will definently be interesting to see. The good thing is that the defense doesn’t seem to be as conservative this year. It also looks like the linebackers will be able to make more plays this season which is good with all the injuries on the defensive line.
  • While still on the defensive side of the football, supposedly the cornerback position looked really good in the practice. Supposedly Williams will actually be pushed for the starting CB position (I think he will still get it though). After starting off slow it appears that Pat Lee is really turning the corner. Last night he had two interceptions during practice. It’s good to see Pat Lee improving but I don’t think he will be anything more than a #4 this season. He has shown the potential to be a very good CB in the league though. Besides Pat Lee; Will Blackmon, Jarrett Bush, and even Joey Porter have looked really good at CB. I guess people can ease some of the worries about the Packers depth at CB.
  • Unless Swain really kicks it into gear I could see him being cut in the first set of roster cutdowns. He is just making way to many mistakes. He keeps dropping passes, is rarely in the correct position,  and just makes mistake after mistake. If he doesn’t turn things around quickly the only way he will be a Packer this season is if he is put on the practice squad.
  • There are supposedly two different stories at defensive tackle. Supposedly Alfred Malone is looking great at the position and is consistently knocking down passes. Meanwhile Daniel Muir is kind of struggling. Hopefully Alfred can continue to play well and Muir can turn things around since at this point the Packers need the most help they can get at the DT position.

Finally their was a roster addition I didn’t report earlier. To replace Favre on the roster the Packers signed Scorpio Babers a CB who was recently cut by Miami. While he has a very slim chance of making the team you gotta love the name.

Morning Training Camp Report (August 1st, 2008)

Today’s morning practice ended a couple hours ago and here are some updates on what happened. I personally couldn’t go so I have three reports for you (I will probably go again sometime between the 12th and 15th and have another detailed training camp report). The first is from JS Online. The second is from Railbird Central. The third is from the Green Bay Press Gazette.

Looking at the three reports there are some things that stand out.

  • Will Blackmon didn’t practice due to a foot injury. Everyone from Coach McCarthy to Will Blackmon say it is nothing and I hope so since Blackmon can’t have another foot injury or his career with the Packers will soon be over.
  • Daniel Muir seems to continue playing well. It’s good to see that Muir is stepping up after all these injuries to the DT position. If he continues to play well and the injuries don’t improve for the other DTs I see Muir possibly having a big impact on the team this season.
  • Bigby is continuing to play well. I think Bigby has pretty much got his spot locked up and I would be surprised if he lost his starting spot. I think the safety battle is now down to Collins vs Rouse.
  • Brady Poppinga is practicing being a DE on passing plays. I think this is interesting and could be a good idea if Popping could get pressure off the inside. I have also heard that the Packers are playing Montgommery at DT as well so we might be trying to use 4 DEs on passing plays. I think this is a very good idea if it works out and at least it is showing that the Packers are trying to do some unique things on defense.

Check back tonight for updates on the night practice.
